Main Street USA: Walt's - An American Restaurant
Walt's, An American Restaurant is situated at 1401 Flower Street (the location of Disney Imagineering in Glendale, California) - or rather on Main Street USA at Disneyland Paris.
A lobby inside continues the turn of the century theming and decor of Main Street. A grand piano stands beside a flight of stairs and a doorway through to Lilly's Boutique (named for Walt Disney's wife).
Framed pictures around the walls show various images of Walt; Walt on the cover of Time magazine; and a newspaper reporting on the opening of Disneyland in California. A cabinet holds a zoetrope that can be rotated with a handle.
A large bust of Walt Disney also sits in the lobby area on the ground floor at the foot of the staircase.
The carpeted stairs lead to the first floor where various rooms play host to dining guests. Beautiful stained glass windows, heavy red velvet curtains, wooden doors and arches, ornate lamps and lighting all contribute to a special atmosphere.
The first floor is divided into separate rooms each themed around a different area of Disneyland Paris. The theming is subtle and mainly consists of paintings and models displayed around each room.
There is Frontierland room which has images of Phantom Manor and Thunder Mountain as well as large bookcases lined with thick leatherbound volumes. An ornate clock sits atop a mantlepiece around a large fireplace. Next to the Frontierland Room is a smaller room themed around the Grand Canyon - a scene which can be viewed on the Disneyland Railroad. Partitioning this area from the corridor is a large stained glass image of the Grand Canyon - it's a beautiful piece of work.
The Discoveryland Room echoes the Jules Verne-inspired land. On the walls are illustrations from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The Adventureland room is more exotic in its decor reflecting a far eastern/middle eastern vibe. There are items relating to Pirates of the Caribbean including a model sunken ship.
A smaller room is themed around Disneyland Hotel and Main Street (a now-removed ground floor room had been themed around Main Street USA) and one final gothic-style room is decorated with art reflecting European fairy tales that feature in Fantasyland such as Sleeping Beauty and Pinocchio.
Food at Walt's is very much American in style. Starters include a Waldorf salad and pastrami whilst mains include a thanksgiving style roast and chilli con carne. Desserts include cheesecake and lime meringue pie.
Not a restaurant I have eaten in but with a menu that sounds tempting and a decor which be sure to provide pleasant surroundings to eat in. It's a fairly expensive table service venue but something to put on the list.
